The last of this years 'astronomy for beginners' was again well attended, which merged into the main event presented by SAS member Heather Nickalls. The two dozen or so visitors coupled with a handful attending via Zoom were treated to an update of meteor spotting in the UK. With limited visual opportunities Heather promoted the use of radio astronomy to gain access to these mystical interlopers.

Member Geoff Kier presented his take on the contentious concept of the 'Big Bang' to an enthralled audience. His professionally presentation visited much of current thinking involving particle physics, with the take home message being 'nothing into something, or should that be 'something from nothing'? Positive feedback from members and guests, all with scrambled brains, supports the idea that its always worth reviewing an idea/concept that challenges our personal model. Unfortunately the poor weather curtails any observing yet again.

A handful of hardy members turned up to welcome visitors to the first dark sky observing session of the season. Unfortunately the poor weather kept everyone indoors where we chatted about everything and nothing with the occasional glimpse of a passing helicopter. October 2025

As schools settle into the new academic year we resume our programme of all things space at our adopted school. With a room full of familiar faces, alongside some keen newbies, we explored the life cycle of stars focusing on the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram. Armed with a box of well thumbed astronomy magazines, a busy time soon ended. October 2026

Packed with talks and demonstrations about rocks and the solar system, together with fun craft and colouring activities for our younger visitors, families enjoyed making rockets, learning about constellations, and exploring the wonders of space. Following positive feed back it was a pleasure to support a local charity supporting the local community. October 2026

Our first guest speaker of the 'new' observing season was Jeremy Shears, Director of the BAA Variable Star Section. He shared his knowledge and experience as we preparing for the next eruption of the recurrent nova, T Coronae Borealis. The meeting was treated to a personal insight into his research on the subject. It was refreshing to be able to share mark 1 eyeball 'observing' with a fellow enthusiast who wears his observing badge on his sleeve. September 2026
